The presence of ochratoxin A (OTA) in musts, grape juice and wines is caused by the contamination of grapes by moulds belonging to the genera Aspergillus and Penicillium during fruit ripening, veraison and harvest. In particular, it has been observed that musts used for red wine production tend to have higher levels of OTA due to the long period of contact between skins and juice during fermentation, compared to white wines.
Since OTA is a toxic and carcinogenic substance, it poses a health risk to consumers, which is why its concentration in wine must be monitored.
In particular, the European Commission, in Regulation (EC) 2023/915, set a maximum limit for OTA in wine of 2 μg/L (ppb).
Test Veritas is sensitive to this issue and in fact, in order to support the laboratories carrying out this type of analysis, it has cyclically introduced the PT for OTA in wine into its catalogue since 2012.
In 2025 Test Veritas is pleased to once again offer the PT for OTA research in wine: don’t miss the opportunity to participate!

PT for the research of Ochratoxin A in red wine
(code W5607)
- Deadline for online orders: May 2nd 2025
- Shipping Date: June 16th 2025
- Test Material: red wine, 1 sample of 50ml. If more material is needed, additional materials can be purchased at a reduced cost.
- Molecule under study: Ochratoxin A
- Indicative concentration: < 10ppb
- For this PT, 2 sets of results can be sent.
- Participation’s fees: 279,00€ for confermatory methods and 219,00€ for the participation with screening methods.
OUR POINTS of STERNGHT
- Separate evaluation data for screening and confirmatory methods, with the assigned value deriving only from quantitative confirmatory results.
- Even if you are evaluating a screening method, the PT simulates what you would do in your routine (comparing your results with the confirmatory ones).
- The semi-quantitative (< or >) screening results receive evaluations provided with dedicated criteria. The quantitative screening and confirmatory results are evaluated through z-score.
- For all the PTs that are part of Progetto Trieste – Mycotoxins it is possible to submit 2 sets of results: with just one subscription you can evaluate 2 laboratory technicians, or 2 different techniques. Both results will be evaluated in the Final Report.
- Multiannual experience in the production of reference materials for Ochratoxin A in red wine.
