Red wine has become one of the most consumed alcoholic beverages in the world over time, requiring strict controls regarding its quality. Due to its high sugar content, grapes are susceptible to infection by mycotoxins (Ochratoxin A) and pathogenic microorganisms during cultivation, such as pests, diseases, and weeds, which can cause significant economic losses, reduce quality, and generate undesirable sensory characteristics in wines. A common practice in viticulture is the use of chemical reagents, such as pesticides, which ensure a constant production of high-quality grapes but at the same time pose a risk to consumer health.
Therefore, it is essential to monitor the presence of both natural contaminants, such as Ochratoxin A, and contaminants from human activity, such as pesticides, and regulate their levels in grapes.
Test Veritas is sensitive to this issue and, in fact, to support laboratories that conduct such analyses, has periodically introduced the PT for the detection of OTA in wine since 2012 and, starting in 2025, has decided to also introduce the PT for the detection of pesticides in wine!

OUR POINTS of STRENGHT
- For Progetto Trieste – Mycotoxins: Separate evaluation data for screening and confirmatory methods, with the assigned value deriving only from quantitative confirmatory results.
- Even if you are evaluating a screening method, the PT simulates what you would do in your routine (comparing your results with the confirmatory ones).
- The semi-quantitative (< or >) screening results receive evaluations provided with dedicated criteria. The quantitative screening and confirmatory results are evaluated through z-score.
- For all the PTs that are part of Progetto Trieste – Mycotoxins it is possible to submit 2 sets of results: with just one subscription you can evaluate 2 laboratory technicians, or 2 different techniques. Both results will be evaluated in the Final Report.
- Multiannual experience in the production of reference materials for Ochratoxin A in red wine.
- In general, our Pesticide Residue Proficiency Tests have a conspicuous list of molecules under study. Of these, a minimum number of molecules will be present. The presence of some of these molecules will be declared and guaranteed. Check our programme to find out the molecules declared as present, it will be updated soon!
- Blank materials available! For all PTs for Pesticides there is an option to purchase blank material (test material before spiking)
