Sulphonamides are widely used in veterinary practice, mainly for fattening calves and pigs. In combination with dihydrofolate reductase inhibitors (e.g. trimethoprim), sulphonamides are also used in the treatment of intestinal infections, mastitis, pneumonia and other systemic diseases. It is therefore possible to find sulphonamide residues in food of animal origin such as meat, tissue, milk and eggs. EU legislation (EU Regulation 37/2010) sets a maximum residue limit for all substances belonging to the sulphonamide group of 100 μg/kg for muscle, fat, liver, kidney, milk and tissue samples.

In the last years some EU Member States have implemented the surveillance of 2 new sulphonamides: sulfaguanidine and sulfamethizole. In order to allow a more thorough control of the laboratories’ analytical performance on sulphonamides in food, Test Veritas decided to improve the list of molecules under study for these PTs:
- More molecules under study for muscle, milk, eggs and fish matrices. Two new molecules have been added to those under study: sulfaguanidine and sulfamethizole.
The complete list of molecules under study is: sulfamethazine, sulfadimethoxine, sulfamerazine, sulfamethoxypyridazine, sulfadiazine, sulfamonomethoxine, sulfathiazole, sulfaquinoxaline, sulfadoxine, sulfamethoxazole, sulfaguanidine, sulfamethizole.
Each Test Material may contain 1 or more of the molecules under study, unless otherwise specified.

OUR POINTS OF STRENGHT!
- With us the convenience doubles! For all the PTs that are part of Progetto Trieste it is possible to submit 2 sets of results: with just one subscription you can receive in the Final Report the evaluation of 2 laboratory technicians, or 2 different techniques.
- Separate evaluation data for screening and confirmatory methods, with the assigned value deriving only from quantitative confirmatory results. This feature of our PTs respects the requirement of UNI CEI EN ISO/IEC 17043:2010 to use fit-for-purpose methods of evaluation, makes the assigned value more reliable and the assessment more valid.
- Even if you are using a screening method, the PT simulates what you would do in the routine (comparing your results with confirmatory ones). The semi-quantitative (< or >) screening results receive evaluations provided with dedicated criteria. The quantitative screening and confirmatory results are evaluated through z-score.
- Whenever possible, we supply naturally contaminated test materials that allow the laboratory to assess the extractive capacity of the method used.
- More reliable assigned value due to more stability of Test Materials. Most of them are provided as lyophilized (to be tested after reconstitution). In this way, regardless of the provenience of the laboratory, every participant can be sure to receive the Test Material in the same conditions. Once reconstituted it is the same as in your routine!
- Test Veritas has more than 25 years of experience as PT provider.
